USA Chapter Meeting, San Antonio, Texas
Event runs Wednesday 4th March 2009 to Saturday 7th March 2009
San Antonio is a dynamic blend of Hispanic, Native American, and European cultures. A truly beautiful city located in southern Texas that was originally settled and home for the Apache Indian tribe. Although Spanish missionaries arrived and settled in 1691, the city was officially founded in 1718 when the Mission San Antonio de Valero (better known as the Alamo) was established.
Today, San Antonio offers one of America's most picturesque walks on the Paseo del Rio (Riverwalk). This 3-mile cobblestone path along the San Antonio River is lined with restaurants, bars, and shops providing the ideal place for the members of the Academy and guests to mix and mingle and shop. The paths and stone stairways were built in the 1930's as a Depression-era federal project creating a unique gathering place for San Antonians and visitors. Although San Antonio is the eighth largest city in the U.S. , it still has a small town, "down home" feel to it that provides a welcoming charm to those visiting for the first time.
Home of the nation's oldest surviving cathedral, and home to Espada Aqueduct, the only functioning water system in the United States from Spanish colonial times, along with its abundance of old Spanish missions, the city thrives with culture and history. There is no better place to explore the "wild west" than at the U.S. conference in San Antonio!
