International Family Law in Canada: IAML Canadian Chapter
Homepage of the Canadian Chapter of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers
Welcome to the homepage of the Canadian Chapter of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
The Canadian Chapter of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers was founded in August 2004 when IAML membership in Canada included only 20 Fellows. Since then the Chapter has grown and now has 40 Fellows including one Judicial Fellow.
Our Fellows are peer reviewed and are all internationally practising specialist family lawyers whose main practice is in Canada. We have Fellows in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec. Many of our Fellows actively participate in the International Academy and at the USA Chapter meetings.
Our Fellows' specialist areas include all aspects of family law including:
- Divorce
- Child Abduction (Hague Convention)
- Child Custody
- Same Sex Partnerships
- Pre and Post - marital Agreements
- Conflicts of law matters both in litigation and also in marital agreements
- Cohabitation Agreements
- Alternative Dispute Resolution including mediation/arbitration, cooperative law and collaborative law.
The Canadian Chapter of the IAML meets once a year, usually at the USA Chapter meetings. Next year the Canadian Chapter will be meeting at the Academy's USA and Canadian Chapter meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota between June 13th and 17th but our Fellows will also be participating in the IAML European Chapter and annual meetings.
Our priorities for the coming year are:
- To keep abreast of international cases and legislative changes that impact on family law
- To continue to expand our membership across Canada in keeping with the existing rigorous standards
- To continue our active participation and development of our profile on behalf of Canadian Fellows both in the USA Chapter and the European Chapter meetings.
